The Friends of Meager Fortune

Ahh, there's nothing like getting an e-mail that calls you a guru. If that's not good for your ego, what is?

We have a new friend, in fact, who's handing out this lovely guru status. The blog is called A Season to Read (isn't that a great name for a book blog??), and Wanda says she has a soft spot for Canadian Literature. Feel free to educate me, Wanda!

She is sharing the book The Friends of Meager Fortune, written by David Adams Richards. This is an international contest (yay!) -- well, the only restriction is that you have to have an address that the book can be sent to. "Under the Highland Park bridge" probably doesn't qualify, ya know? (Not that anyone should have an address there. I think there's a road under it.)

You must be 18 to win. I like that rule. And yes, there are extra entries available.

Entries will be accepted until April 21, with the winner announced on April 22 -- Earth Day.

Wanda, I like your style.

Check it all out via this link.

Girls in Trucks

If all these girls are in trucks, where are the boys? Are they the ones stuck driving the minivans????

Yep, it's more copies of Girls in Trucks for you. Five copies, in fact, offered by our good pal Lisa at Books Ahoy! How can you resist another chance at this new book written by Katie Crouch? (It has a great cover, which does not evoke MY mental image that the title inspires)

This is, once again, a US and Canada only contest, with no PO Box addresses, please. And yes, I looked at my box today and sighed ... until I saw the flat envelope within it. I feel your pain, fellow PO Box people.

You have until April 7, but don't delay. You aren't, after all, Scarlett O' Hara!

Everyone is Beautiful

Dar at Peeking Between the Pages just rocks. I've said that before; I'll say it again. And now I'll tell you why.

She's got a guest post by author Katherine Center, and a giveaway to go with it. Just in case you're not tempted enough by a guest blog post. Which you should be. There's also a link to Dar's review of Ms. Center's book, Everyone is Beautiful. And a synopsis. And I'm not going to say anything else about this give, about how it's open until April 6 and the book is Dar's only gently-read ARC, and that it's an international contest.

Nope. I'm not going to say any of that. Not me.

Use this link to enter and be the winner instead of me.

I'd Tell you the Title, but then I'd Have to Kill You

Nope, that's not the name of a book (for you who read headlines), although it would make a good Middle Grade or YA title, wouldn't it?

I got an e-mail from Amy at chic Book Reviews, asking if I'd mention some goodness she's got going on. You see, she's launching this new review site and has a secret book she's going to give away on April 1, when the site launches.

I really doubt this is an April Fool's joke. Check it out for yourself.

Mrs. Meyer's Clean Home

Luanne at A Bookworm's World is contemplating washing her windows. Actually, I think she might be contemplating bribing me to do it for her, and I wish her the best of luck with that. My idea of washing windows involves making the Tour Manager call a service.

Anyway, if you're more motivated than I am -- and really, it's not hard to be -- you might want to check out the book that Luanne's got over at her blog. It's called Mrs. Meyer's Clean Home and I'm sure it tells you who Mrs. Meyer is. Maybe a relative of Oscar???

There are five copies up for grabs. US and Canada only, please, and no PO Boxes.

You have until April 16, but get busy now. Spring has sprung and it's time to clean... Luanne's windows. *wink*

I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti

Enroute to Life has another memoir to share (well, five copies of one book. You know how it goes).

This time, it's the fabulously-titled I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti, which just conjures up SO MUCH. For me, at least. Clearly, it did for author Giulia Melucci (although sometimes, the title an author picks isn't what winds up on the cover. Still, we'll give it to her.)

You have until April 10 if you are in the US and/or Canada (although how you can be in both at the same time escapes me. Yeah, you can straddle the border, but immigration's not too keen on you doing that anymore.) -- and no PO Box addresses, sad to say. Yes, friends, PO Box discrimination continues! (I do wonder about the people who have PO Boxes as their permanent addresses. But that's off-topic here.)

Use this link and be sure to check out the other ways to gain entries!

Do-Over

There are other ways to gain entries, so be sure to read the whole post.

You have until April 25.

Book Party: Bonnie Vanak

Over at what has quickly become one of my favorite sites, Unusual Historicals, author Bonnie Vanak is celebrating her latest release, The Lady and the Libertine.

There's an interview with Bonnie, an excerpt (that includes the death of a snake -- Susan hates snakes, so that's a nice little moment in her book!), AND at the very bottom, the chance to win a copy of this seventh Egyptian Historical written by Bonnie.

Bonnie's another author I've met in person, and online. See why I dig her so much.

Ruthie at Books Books and More Books thinks she's a pain in the butt. Not so, my friend! You are doing important stuff, helping connect readers to good books. We need more people like you -- like all you book bloggers who sponsor contests of all sizes and varieties. Who talk about books and who share their passion for the really good reads they encounter.

Ruthie's doing all that by sharing a copy of Pain Killers, written by Jerry Stahl. She's also got a great interview, buy links, and a link to browse the book.

How I Got to be Whoever It Is I Am

One thing I like about Drey, of Drey's library: she's like me. You can always count on her to have something a little bit off the beaten path but still really amazingly cool.

In this case, it's five copies of Charles Grodin's How I Got to be Whoever It Is I Am. This guy is my new hero; he got thrown out of Hebrew school. Know how many times I'd tried to accomplish exactly that???

That's only one small part of the man. In fact, the way Drey tells it, there's SO much more to this guy, it's amazing.

Check it out and if you're in the US and/or Canada, but don't have a PO Box, throw your name in the hat for a copy of this. It looks awesome.

Use this link by March 29.

Too Hot to Handle

Marie over at The Burton Review needs some help.

You see, she'd like to give away her gently-read ARC copy of Robin Kaye's Too Hot to Handle. It's not quite that easy, though. Ms. Kaye is stopping by The Burton Review for an interview, and Marie wants to know what WE want to hear from Ms. Kaye. The person with the best question gets the book.

I know it's hard to ask good questions about a book you haven't read yet. So does Marie; that's why she's posted a link to the author's website. Maybe that'll provide inspiration.

Yeah, it's a little bit of work, but won't it be worth it when a published author answers YOUR question? (What? You're so used to interviews now that you're jaded? Go back to that excitement you used to have. Tap into that.)

Use this link by April 5.

Reader Review Giveaway

Now, here's something different! Our good friend Alyce Reese (At Home With Books) has gotten a little bit (ok - a lot) behind on her review copies lately.

So, she's made two lists of books. One list has all of the books that she is obligated to review because she has made an agreement with the author or publisher to review those books. The other list includes books that Alyce has gotten from other sources (these are the ones she's sharing here).

Here are the books that Alyce would like to share with you. They are free to a good home. First come first served as long as you agree to review them.

Joker One by Donovan Campbell
Age of Orphans by Laleh Khadivi
The Long Fall by Walter Mosley

Unfortunately Alyce can only afford to ship to the US and Canada.

Click here for more info and to email Alyce as to your choice!

Florinda hopes you'll join her in celebrating two years of blogging with a little giveaway. She has three slightly-used ARCs (Advance Reader's Copies, for you non-book-blogging folks) that need new homes, but if none of them appeals to you, perhaps you'd like a $20 Amazon.com e-gift certificate? Buffalo Gal, by Laura Pedersen
True Colors, by Kristin Hannah
Honeymoon in Tehran: Two Years of Love and Danger in Iran, by Azadeh Moaveni
This one will be easy - to enter, just leave a comment and tell Florinda which book you'd like, or if you'd prefer the gift certificate. The Disappearance

My good friend Candy over at My Raves also has an interview happening today. (Is it interview an author day or something???) She's hosting Efrem Sigel, who has written one of the better books she's read this year. (Since she's read my book, I think I should be insulted by that. But I'm not.)

Candy is giving away her copy of the book, so that means you're not getting a brand new book. She IS gentle on her books; I can vouch for that.

You've got until April 15, which is tax day here in the States. The bad news is that Candy's self-employed, so she can only afford postage within the US.

Candy's also very cool. Her blog's worth hanging around.

Oh. We're here to talk books? Really? Okay, then. We've got an awesome one for you -- it's author Brian O'Rourke who's stopped by Ruthie's place for an interview -- and a free copy of his latest release from Lyrical Press, The Unearthed.

You've got until March 20 to enter and hey, did I mention that The Unearthed is an E-BOOK??? That's right. Anyone with an e-mail address can enter, and yep, you CAN read right on this same screen that you're using to read me gush about Korn and Lyrical Press and Ruthie and Brian O'Rourke's new e-book called The Unearthed.

Sheldon Rusch three-fer

Drey's keeping the library hopping by conducting her first interview! Yay, Drey! Her victim/guinea pig/gracious author of the day is none other than Sheldon Rusch, who has written three books that Drey describes as crime fiction: For Edgar, The Boy with Perfect Hands, and Separated at Death.

You can own your own set of Rusch's three novels, compliments of Drey and Mr. Rusch himself. This is for our US and Canadian friends, and those of us with PO Boxes are out of luck. (sigh) And we should sigh; the interview is great and who doesn't like a good crime novel???

Act before March 27. There are some extra ways to win.

Kitty Takes a Holiday

Drey's one of my favorite book bloggers; e-mail from her always makes me laugh. (Yeah, that's all it takes to make you my favorite. I'm easy. I know.)

She's got a contest going right now for Carrie Vaughn's Kitty Takes a Holiday. This is book 3 in the series, for those of you like me who get easily confused about which book falls where in the series.

There's only ONE copy up for grabs. And since it's a book that's coming courtesy of the publisher, the usual rules apply: US and Canada only, and no PO Box addresses, please.

You have until March 22. Don't delay. And remember, YOU are responsible for finding out if you're a winner or not! Add Drey to your reader or your follower list so you don't miss a thing.

It's a memoir written by Andrew Bridge, called Hope's Boy, and it's the story of a childhood spent in foster care. 100th Post Celebration

I have to smile fondly at these celebrations for reaching the 100th post anniversary. The Meet and Greet is coming up on 600, and here at Win a Book, the team's posted almost 2,000.

But there's no denying that 100 posts is a milestone. It's almost a validation of a blog, a notice to the world that yeah, you're here for the long run. And you mean business.

The most recent of our book-loving friends to reach this threshold is Marta, over at Marta's Meanderings. And does she have a giveaway to help celebrate!

There are TWO big book packages -- and there will be five winners of EACH.

I'll let your eyes bug out over at Marta's site itself. This is ...extraordinary. (and Win a Book is honored to be part of Marta's adventures in blogging, too!)

Some basics:

These are open to the US and Canada only, no PO Box addresses, please. You have until March 31.

I can't find the permalink, so you may have to scroll a bit. It's good for you. Here's the general link to Marta's place: LINK.

Dear Anais

I swear, I have not met a bigger advocate for poetry than Serena at Savvy Verse and Wit -- and I've known a few poets in my day, too.

To convince you that poetry isn't the Big Bad it seemed to be when we were forced to study it in high school, she's got a copy of one very interesting-looking book: Dear Anais: My Life in Poems For You, written by Diana M. Raab.

That's not all, though. Ms. Raab has also offered to send two other winners each one copy of her chapbook (that's a collection of poetry, usually self-published, or published in small quantities by a small press), My Muse Undresses Me.

Check it all out, including two (VERY readable and easily understood!) poems by Ms. Raab.

The Sudden Disappearance of Seetha

Whenever Dar at Peeking Between the Pages drops us an e-mail, she's always mentioning her weather. Today, it made me giggle because as I was driving home, I flipped on the traffic and weather station on my XM radio and when they'd cycled through once, somehow or for some reason, they started giving me the Minneapolis road conditions.

I don't live anywhere NEAR Minneapolis, folks.

So. Anyway, onto the give that Dar's got happening. It's for a book called The Sudden Disappearance of Seetha, which was written by Andrea Gunraj. Actually, the give is for TWO copies of this book.

Dar's also sweet enough to post a link to her review. That's always important.

Both copies are hardback; one is Dar's own very gently read copy. You've got to love that. And it's open worldwide, my friends!! Big thanks to Dar, because if mailing from the US isn't cheap, Canada can be worse.

You have until March 20 to enter. Don't delay.

Public Service Announcement:

This is a PSA of a different sort.

Author Shirley Damsgaard posted over at the Something Wicked group blog that the Cedar Rapids Public Library is in need of donations to replenish their stock after a flood. A flood that happened last summer, almost a year ago.

Check out what's going on; it looks like an eBay auction is going to happen as a way to raise funds (too bad for those of you who'd been hoping to donate some of your extra books -- although maybe you can donate them to the auctions. It's worth asking!).

Any help you can give to keep undiscovered friends reading... it's always a good thing.

Interview With Colleen Gleason

I'll admit it: I'm a Colleen Gleason fan. How can you NOT be? She's charming online. She's even better in person. And her Gardella books? Simply amazing. I hate to see the series come to a close, but all good things must end.

Colleen is over at Romance Bandits talking about the ending of this monumental series that's set many bars for future writers to try to jump over.

Interview with Kathleen Kent

Suvudu in business!

Okay, Suduvu isn't exactly the easiest word to type. In fact, like an old-time Pittsburgh band whose name I could never get right (I called them NECRADECIA when their name was NECRACEDIA), Suvudu isn't any better.

But they have some fantastic things to offer readers. For free, too!

You'll have to register for this service, but they are offering free books from Robin Hobb (a favorite of mine) and Naomi Novik. And more! (Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars series, anyone?)

The idea is to offer the first book in a series. You know, so you'll get hooked and run out to your local independent bookstore and buy the rest.

If you've wanted a safe way to investigate some of the best in the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres, this is it, gang. You can't beat a free book and if you don't like it?

Use that delete key!

Yes, it IS that simple.

Register and everything else via this link.

(Did I mention Robin Hobb???????)

S.A. Odusni Guest Post

S.A. Odunsi, author of the social science book, Deep Thinking The Human Condition: New Ideas We Can’t Do Without, will be stopping off at Scribe Vibe for a guest post.

The concepts presented in the book will open up a dialogue about how we look at our past, present, and future. Odunsi presents new ideas to chronic world problems in a very creative and imaginative way. Arguments presented are well worth debating and studying. With the numerous current global crises taking place, Deep Thinking The Human Condition is highly recommended to those concerned about why we are unable to solve world problems and why it is essential to change our approach when tackling major global plights.

Godmother

I LOVE the premise of this book! Cinderella's fairy godmother is a bookseller in New York City. She's in exile. And she's got some wrongs to right.

The book is Godmother, and it's written by Carolyn Turgeon. It can be yours by dropping in on Living Read Girl (which is such a great Rob Zombie pun, it always makes me smile).

Three Rivers Press is letting one lucky person experience this fun-sounding book -- but you've got to be a fast-moving person. The contest is only open until Thursday the fifth of March!! That's tomorrow, boys and girls!

Use this link. Check out the cool videos (Susan loves the Muppets, so much so that she named one of her characters Kermit Ladd. Get it???). And be sure to leave a fairy-tale related comment!

Standing Still

I was watching a young (think late high school or college-aged) woman read a book while working out on the Wave machine this morning. I wondered if she could read as well on the machine; I sure can't. Would she do better Standing Still?

Oh, I'm funny. Standing Still is actually the name of a book written by Kelly Simmons. And our friend Bermudaonion's got a copy that she's ready to share. She's got links to two reviews (from Win a Book friends!), too, so you can read all about it before you enter.

US and Canada only, please, and no PO Boxes.

You have until March 7, with the winner announced on March 8.
