This Week At Amberkatze's...

I can't say it any better than Amberkatze does...

This week's interview and contest is with the author of one of my favourite series. I Love a lot of paranormal books but the Anna Strong Chronicles are on the top of my list when it comes to vampire books and she is definitely the vampire I would most love to be. So I am really excited this week to welcome Jeanna C. Stein to Amberkatze's Book Blog.

Night Rising

Our friends over at Blood of the Muse have a goodie to share...

It's called Night Rising, and it's written by Chris Marie Green. It's the first book in a new series, too -- you can jump right in on the ground floor! (and do so in style with an autographed copy, too)

You have until September 20 to enter, and it's open worldwide!

Follow the entry directions and yes, there's an additional entry if you blog about the contest. I know some of you like to do that.

Win a box of ten books from Hachette!

Scoot on over to Book Room Reviews for details on how to win one of five boxes of books Hachette Publishing is giving away for back to school! There are some great looking titles in the boxes, including Dewey: The Small Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, The Book of Calamities, Say You're One of Them, and Titanic's Last Secrets.

Deadline is September 17th, open to US and Canadian residents.

Read Well, Think Well

Through surfing, I found another new book site: Amateur De Livre. And guess what they're doing over there?

Yep, giving away a book. This time, it's Read Well, Think Well, written by Dr. Hal W. Lanse.

There are multiple ways to gain entries. You have until September 29, which is a long time from now. You may forget to enter if you don't do it now.

Use this link.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

Through more surfing, I came across Scribe Vibe, who's got a copy of the modern-day classic Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, written by Susanna Clarke, to give to a reader.

There's no date to enter by, nor are there mailing restrictions.

Check it out via this link.

Clean at The POD People

The POD People are hosting their own giveaways nowadays on Free Book Fridays! Starting today, you can win a copy of Clean by Ken Sweet. But you've only got until Sunday the 31st to enter.

So drop on over and leave a comment for an entry! You'll need to check back on the 2nd to see if you've won, however, because you're responsible for emailing them to claim your prize. Why don't you just make it easy on yourself and subscribe to the PODPeep feed so you'll know if you've won and you won't miss any future Free Book Fridays?

First Daughter

Lisa at Minds Alive on the Shelves has a new contest going, now that her part of the 50 Books in 50 Days contest is over.

In fact, she's got a lovely hardcover to share. The book is Eric Van Lustbader's First Daughter, and she's provided a link to her review so you can check that out before deciding if this is something you'd like to read (because Win a Book readers know what they like).

Unfortunately, due to astronomical postal rates, this has to be restricted to the US and Canada. You have until September 5 to enter, but why wait?

Extra chances for entries and all that via this link.

The Smart One

Dawn over at She is Too Fond of Books has a problem. She read and reviewed Ellen Meister's The Smart One, fully intending to give it away when she was done.

Okay, that's what most of us do. So what's the problem, you ask?

She loves the book too much to part with it.

Hey, it's happened to all of us. Personally, I've been known to ask a publicist for an extra copy because I knew in advance that I'd love a book too much to part with it. Dawn didn't have that foresight with this book.

So, instead, she'd put together a goodie package for you to win! Check it out, in her own words:

I think that we have a bit of the pretty one, the smart one and the wild one in each of us. I have a little gift package with a cosmetic bag (with mirror, perfect for corralling lipstick, a comb and hair ties in your handbag), a brain-teaser puzzle (should be a cinch for the smart one in you!), and some rub-on tattoos (that rebel phase isn’t permanent, is it?). Just leave a comment about The Smart One (your take on sibling “labelling”, perhaps?); enter by midnight on Thursday September 4, I’ll announce the winner next Friday!

And wait until you read the review... this book spoke to Dawn, all right.

Read and enter via this link.

Lydia Cassatt Reading the Morning Paper

Author Meg Waite Clayton dropped me a line -- to say thanks for spreading her name around. Wasn't that awesome?

BUT, Ms. Clayton's got some books of her own to share. Could they maybe have influenced her own fiction? Read it and find out.

This latest book is a modern-day classic (says Susan, who could be wrong but is ever hopeful). Lydia Cassatt Reading the Morning Paper, written by Harriet Scott Chessman.

Best of all? It's been autographed by Ms. Chessman.

Wait. That wasn't the best part, although it was pretty darn great. If you do one of two things (or both) and are the winner, Ms. Clayton will throw in a copy of her own book, The Wednesday Sisters.

Two great books. One great contest.

Read more about it and enter via this link.

Our new friend Posthumouser dropped me an e-mail tonight, telling me she's got a contest for Quintet, written by Douglas Arthur Brown, going on at her blog. This is a genuine paperback book, not an ARC.

You have until September 10, and there are multiple ways to win.

And... you international readers are happy! This contest is open worldwide. We at West of MARS feel a bit left out, but that's okay. Susan's TBR pile is threatening to take over the world.

The First Law Trilogy

If it's a trilogy, what are the chances that it's a fantasy? Pretty good...

And Fantasy Book Critic has the goods -- for US Readers, only, though.

Here's what he says:
In support of the US release of “Last Argument of Kings”, the highly anticipated and thrilling conclusion to Joe Abercrombie’s acclaimed fantasy trilogy The First Law, Pyr Books has agreed to give away THREE SETS of the trilogy including copies of “The Blade Itself”, “Before They Are Hanged” and “Last Argument of Kings”!!!

Three sets of three books each. And, for those of you who've never really gotten into fantasy because it's hard to find each book in the trilogy, this is the full set. You're good to go.

Melsy626 emerged from Love to Read long enough to drop us an e-mail about a new give she's just posted.

The book is called Green Monster. It's an ARC copy, and it's intended only for a US reader (sorry!)

Oh, yeah. It was written by Rick Shefchik. I haven't heard of him before, but that's okay. We're all learning about him together and who knows? Maybe he'll be the next household name. Then we can all say we knew of him when.

You have until Sept. 2 to enter. BUT follow the rules Melsy626 has posted or she'll delete your entry!

Don't let that happen. Use this link to read carefully before you enter.

Goodnight Nobody

Shana at Literarily dropped us an e-mail today, too. (It's been a big e-mail day and for that we thank you!)

She's got a copy of Goodnight Nobody, written by best-selling author Jennifer Weiner. You know how it goes... the shelves are overflowing, how can you fix this before the husband bursts a blood vessel 'cause there's no room for his stuff? So Shana's decided she can part with it -- so long as she sends it to someone who really wants it.

Here's what she says about it:

This is a used hardcover copy. A small section including the first 23 pages is coming away from the spine. Other than that, it is in excellent condition.

This is a quick one -- you've only got until Friday the 22nd of August. Don't wait. Use this link -- and be sure to check out the multiple ways to enter!

Nope, your eyes aren't deceiving you. There's another copy of Joshua Henkin's latest novel that can be yours!

My friend Gautami has an autographed copy of the soon-to-be-released paperback version of Matrimony that can be yours -- provided you like to read good books (that's her rule, not mine, folks!). She'll send it anywhere in the world, too.

There are various ways to enter, but you've only got until the 25th of August. Still, you're a Win a Book reader, right? You know better than to put it off! Besides, Gautami's got really cool links to reviews and to Mr. Henkin's site. If you're not real sure what the book is about, check out those links.

Use this link to enter.

Just leave her a comment with your name, saying you want to enter. She'll be choosing a winner on August 28th. International readers welcome!

Along for the Ride

Saskia Walker is giving away a copy of her book, Along for the Ride!

I love Saskia's paranormal romance and erotica books. I was even lucky enough to win a lithograph of the cover art of her novel, Unveiling the Sorceress, from one of her previous giveaways!

So stop by and visit with The Naughty Lady from Shady Lane.

Leave her a comment quickly...she'll be picking a winner on Sunday.

It's Superman! The Novel

Sometimes I need a little vacation from being a grown-up, and Kim & Jason at Escape Adulthood remind me of that! Such a fun place to visit, and every Thursday there are giveaways from their super cool lemonade stand!

This week, the prize is a copy of It's Superman! The Novel.

To be eligible to win, leave a comment with your least favorite super hero and why by 11:59 CST tonight. Get movin' on this one!

Caribou's Mom used our handy-dandy e-mail to tell me she's teamed up with Hyperion Books and author David Fuller to give away one hardback, autographed copy of the soon-to-be-released new novel, Sweetsmoke.

This is a US-only contest, due to restrictions from Hyperion Press.

It runs from yesterday, August 20, to September 3, when one winner will be picked.

You can earn up to five chances to win. See the blog for more information.

He's got the first two volumes in the The Auralia Thread, Auralia's Colors and the new Cyndere's Midnight, for three lucky winners. Yep, three people will win the set.

I've read Auralia's Colors (read my review at Front Street Reviews, if you like) and can recommend these books to anyone who likes fantasy -- or fiction that'll make you think. Overstreet's world is complex and has a lot to say.

This contest is restricted to North America only. Sorry, folks, but the books are coming from the publisher.

Author Tim Powers set

Pat at Pat's Fantasy Hotlist has a doozy of a giveaway (like usual. Have you noticed how cool his stuff is?).

He's got a matching set of the numbered editions of Last Call, Expiration Date, and Earthquake Weather, written by Tim Powers and illustrated by someone named J.K. Potter. (weird name, huh?)

As always with Pat's giveaways (and, indeed, ALL giveaways), read and follow the entry instructions carefully. Failing to play by the rules means you'll be disqualified and with a handsome set like that, DQ would be a shame.

Big Splash

Lenore, over at Presenting Lenore, is presenting a new middle-grade book to us today. Check out how she blurbed it in her mail to me:

Jack Ferraiolo has donated 3 signed hardcover copies of his debut novel "The Big Splash" for a contest over at my blog. The pitch is "hardboiled detective novel meets Goodfellas set in a middle school" and it is awesome, and not just for middle schoolers. There's so much for adults too. It comes out today!!

Okay, let me recap:

Middle-grade novel
Three copies -- signed, hardcovers
US/Canada only.
Enter by September 3 (but do it now! Why wait?)

A few other things she hasn't included in her mail: with the contest entry post, she's included a review of the book and an interview with the author.

Hello, let me be clearer: An interview with the Emmy-award winning (for his work on WordGirl) author.

This book's going to be huge, and if it's not, it's because there's no fairness in this world.

Check it all out (and laugh at some of those great lines) via this link.

A Babe in Ghostland

So here's Susan, posting contests instead of finishing off her first ever Lisa Cach book (I know! Where have I been?).

And here's her friend Shaunesay, who runs Shaunie's Happy Place, with a copy of Ms. Cach's A Babe in Ghostland. To give away.

Go get it before I can talk her into fixing the contest my way, will you please? You've got until September 1 to do this. And for those of you keeping score at home, it's registered with BookCrossing. You know the drill... no obligation for you to journal, but us BXers love to hear what others think of something we've read.

Sweet Life

Bookroomreviews is one busy book blogger and contest runner.

Author Mia King was so excited to hear that Bookroomreviews LOVED her book, Sweet Life, that she's going to make prize packs for THREE winners. That's right. Three.

In the prize packs will be copies of the books and a basket of chocolate. Wait. Not just an ordinary basket of chocolate, either. Check it out:
Valued at over $80, our “Life is Sweet” Hawaiian gift basket includes:

one small gold box of Chocolate Dipped Original Shortbread Cookies

one gold box of Kohala Brownie Assortment

one petite box of Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Rocky Road

one petite box of Combination (Dark and Milk) Chocolate Covered Macadamia Nuts

three Dark Chocolate Dipped Original Shortbread cookies

one Original Biscotti with Milk Chocolate waves

one Original Biscotti with Dark Chocolate Waves

one signed copy of GOOD THINGS

one signed copy of SWEET LIFE

an assortment of temporary hibiscus tattoos, tropical key chains, monogrammed GOOD THINGS and SWEET LIFE pens, inspiring quote cards (you know I love quotes!), bookmarks, and more!

All of this comes in a lovely keepsake woven basket for you to store your favorite Mia King books.

But........ there's a catch.

Fifty excited people need to enter for Ms. King to throw in a second basket. And after 50 more, she'll throw in that third. Of course, there are ways to gain extra entries. Fifty ought to be easy. So should 100. Besides, you have until September 2 to make this happen. No sweat!

Still not enough for you? Since Sweet Life won't be released until September 2, Ms. King is offering a $500 online goodie bag for anyone who purchases a copy of Sweet Life on the release date (reminder: that's Sept. 2). Mark your calendars.

One catch here, too: you've got to buy the book from Barnes and Nobel, either online or in person. Submit your receipt to Ms. King for your entry.

How's THAT for making a big noise about an upcoming release?

Now the sad news: this is a US-only contest. 'Cause chocolate... it doesn't always travel so well.

True Detective

My good friend Nimrodiel, over at Confessions of a Literary Persuasion, has realized that her box of books to share is possibly bigger than mine. She'd like to fix that, starting with a copy of True Detective, written by James A. Huebner.

This trade paperback copy of the book has been autographed by the author himself. It's also registered at, but the winner's under no obligation to journal -- although it'd be nice. We BookCrossers like to know where our books go and what people think of them.

Nim ever so nicely provides a link to her review, so you can read about the book before you enter.

Be sure to read the contest rules carefully and follow the directions. If you want to read this book, you really don't want to blow it for yourself, do you?

You have until September 10 to enter. This contest is open world-wide.

Read Well, Think Well

Summer's coming to a close, at least for our little people. You know: the ones who we stuff inside a school building with glee, grateful they are no longer underfoot and complaining about being bored. (Can you tell I've got some of them, myself?)

Yep, gang. School is getting ready to start, at least here in the States. Some schools are already back in session. Others will go as late as after Labor Day.

That's why the timing of this massive giveaway is perfect.

Hal W. Lanse, PhD, is giving away TEN -- yes, you read that right! Ten -- copies of his book, Read Well, Think Well: Build Your Child's Reading, Comprehension, and Critical Learning Skills.

And, of course, there's a catch. He needs help coming up with a no-cost marketing plan. And you are the one to help him.

You have until 29 August to think up your plan and enter, and the winners will be picked on 30 August.

After the success I saw yesterday with the book blogging world helping Angie Fox reach the best-seller list, I know you guys can help make something happen for this man, too. I have faith in you guys.

Rashmi's got another for you guys, over at A Book Blogger's Diary.

This time, it's The Badenweiler Waltz, written by GW Kroeker.

The author has offered two copies, and to people who live in North America and Europe. (Curious as to why? Check out the post!)

Get busy; the entries close on August 18.

The Night Villa

Rashmi at A Book Blogger's Diary is certainly busy lately!

This time, she's got a copy of The Night Villa, written by Carol Goodman. Since the book is coming from the publisher, Ballantine, this is a US-only contest.

The contest ends August 26, and there are a number of ways in which you can gain entries. Check it all out via this linkC.

The Crossing

It's not out on shelves yet, but Rashmi at A Book Blogger's Diary has a copy of The Crossing, Joy Nash's new book, to give away, as part of Ms. Nash's 50 books, 50 days giveaway. (I suspect you'll be seeing a lot of these posted here. At least, I hope so.)

This giveaway is, as Rashmi says, "Open Worldwide." So you international people...

You have until August 19, so get busy! You have a bit of work to do that will culminate in you leaving a thoughtful question for the author, but it's worth it.

Left to Die

Yep, Lisa Jackson is heating up. This is the second contest for a book of hers that I've posted this week. It's only Tuesday!

Rashmi over at A Book Blogger's Diary dropped me an e-mail to say she's got three copies of Left to Die, by Lisa Jackson, to give away, thanks to the cool people at Kensington Press. (I can totally vouch for how cool the Kensington people are, so be sure you get in on this one)

There are multiple ways to win, but I'll let you read about them and enter as you choose. There also don't seem to be any geographical restrictions...

You have until August 31. But why wait?

Check it all out via this link.

Remember Me?

Amanda at Life and Times of a "New" New Yorker dropped me an e-mail (*happy sigh*) to say she's doing her first-ever contest. She's doing this to clear up some space, of course, but also to give back since she's been lucky enough to win a few books, herself.

She's got a hardcover copy of Sophie Kinsella's Remember Me? to share. Yep, Ms. Kinsella's the author of the Shopaholic books, although this isn't part of that series.

She doesn't list geographical restrictions, and the only way to enter is to leave her a comment (be sure to leave contact information of some sort!), so enter via this link.

Genuine Men

Heather at Age 30, a Year of Books has a cool contest going on right now. Not only is she giving away a review copy of Genuine Men, she's asking you to spend a few minutes leaving her a comment about a special man you know. (and to read the comments left by others.)

This is a fabulous idea. I mean, we like to dig on our men. It's fun.

But it's also fun to appreciate them, too.

The contest will remain open until 2 September. Start thinking of the cool men in your life. Dads, husbands, kids, cousins, the boy next door... there's got to be one.

Enter via this link.

BookCloseouts Buck a Book Sale

I just got wind of one of my worst addictions: BookCloseOuts is having a sale this month. One buck for certain titles.

I have a love/hate relationship with BookCloseouts. Love 'em for their cheap books. Hate 'em for their cheap books.

You book lovers know exactly what I'm talking about...

Check out the sale via this link. And remember, I'm only doing to you what I'm doing to myself...

The Immortals

Remember when I posted about Joy Nash's 50 days, 50 books giveaway?

Well, Booklorn got in on the fun and she's got a copy! An autographed copy (even better).

She will also mail ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. (guess that leaves us Western Martians out, but that's okay. I've got too many books as it is.)

Every week between now and 15 September, she'll have a different way to enter. Be sure to stop back and explore what she's cooked up. This week, it's easy. Leave her a comment.

Check it out, along with any details I've omitted, via this link.

This Week at Stone Soup...

Katrina's throwing the doors open again, guys!

Any book that's under $25 can be YOURS. Just read her post and follow the directions.

And yep, this is open to anyone in the world, so you international people should be happy. I'm doing my best by you, but all I can mostly do is report the news.

Treasures of the Dark Contest

I don't know who this originated with, but I came across another scavenger hunt-type contest over at Lori Devoti's site. I'm glad I did; she's a new author to me and this way, I can learn more about her!

Shamelessly stolen from her blog...
Win great prizes from six authors of dark romantic fiction: Eve Silver, Jennifer St. Giles, Lori Devoti, Michele Hauf, Rebecca York, and Vivi Anna.

One winner gets it all! Here’s what’s in the prize package: Autographed copy of NEW MOON by Rebecca York. ARC of the anthology, NATURE OF THE BEAST, which includes Eve Silver’s historical gothic novella, Kiss of the Vampire. Copy of HIS FORGOTTEN FOREVER by Michele Hauf and a DVD of UNDERWORLD II and chocolate! Signed copies (one each) of SILKEN SHADOWS by Jennifer St. Giles and LURE OF THE WOLF by Jennifer St. Giles.
Signed copies of UNBOUND by Lori Devoti and GUARDIAN’S KEEP by Lori Devoti.

You'll have to visit the websites of all these authors and answer questions, but hey, it's worth it. I can vouch for Eve Silver and Vivi Anna, and I'm sort of familiar with Michele Hauf and Jennifer St. Giles...

Anyone who wants to know more than me, have at it. *grin*

Check it out via this link.

Left to Die

Calling all you Lisa Jackson fans! Wendy's Minding Spot has an ARC of Ms. Jackson's latest (wait, didn't she just have one out in the spring? That's prolific!), called Left to Die.

This is a US-only contest. Sorry, you international folks.

You have until 24 August, and you can get extra entries if you blog about the contest.

Check it out via this link.

The Summoning

Bookroomreviews has a good one for a Monday! It's The Summoning, written by Kelley Armstrong. Kelley Armstrong, you paranormal fans know, is the author of the Women of the Otherworld series.

Well, this is apparently a new series, and The Summoning is the first in it.

You can be one of the first to read it, come September first, when the winner is pulled. (Actually two will be awarded, and there are no geographical restrictions listed.)

As usual, there are ways to gain multiple entries. Check 'em -- and the book -- via this link.

The Shack

Our friends at Hatchette Book Group are really with it. Awhile back, they invited blogger Icedream (from the Reading in Appalachia blog) to interview author William P. Young, who goes by Paul.

Icedream has posted part of that interview, and is giving away a copy of Mr. Young's new book, The Shack. This sounds like quite the controversial book, and its path to publication is fascinating.

Read all about it, and enter, via this link.

Sorry, gang. Since Hatchette will be doing the mailing, they've asked that this be a US/Canada only giveaway. But you can still buy the book at your favorite independent bookstore! (Small consolation, I know)

The Brass Verdict

Lori emerged from her Reading Corner to drop us an e-mail, letting us know she's got a REALLY cool Advance Reader's Copy to share with you guys: Michael Connelly's new to-be-released book, The Brass Verdict.

The book won't be released until October, but Lori's willing to share her copy on August 22, so enter soon.

This is a US-only contest, and you must sign Mr. Linky as well as provide some sort of contact information. No info, no entry.

And, of course, if you blog about the contest, you get an extra entry.

Last Argument of Kings

Pat, over at Pat's Fantasy Hotlist, has a US Edition of Last Argument of Kings, written by Joe Abercrombie.

As always with one of Pat's great gives, be sure to follow his directions carefully. You don't want to disqualify yourself.

I'd been hoping for an excuse to offer public congratulations to debut author Jocelynn Drake, whose Nightwalker entered the USA Today Best-seller list at #117.

This week, Amberkatze has your chance to check out what the hype is about. Amber's got a great interview with Ms. Drake and an autographed copy of Nightwalker -- plus a really cool magnet -- for one lucky winner.

Check it all out via this link. Be sure to offer congratulations to Ms. Drake on the best-seller status -- and if you don't win this copy, why not help her climb higher?

Driving Sideways by Jess Riley

Tracy at BookRoomReviews dropped me an e-mail and asked me to remind you guys (if you don't already know about it) that she's got a copy of Driving Sideways, by Jess Riley, to give to one of you.

Ms. Riley, herself, donated this copy -- and she signed it, too.

You have until August 22 to enter (there seem to be no geographical restrictions), but why wait?

HarperCollins and MySpace

Do you have a MySpace account? Have you friended HarperCollins publisher?

You might want to.

J. Kaye is reporting that they are going to send out galleys and ARCs to randomly-chosen friends of HarperCollins.

I'd like to know where is the love for us Facebook fiends???

The Immortal

Lisamm at Books on the Brain has not one but TWO copies of The Immortal, Traci Slatton's hot novel.

However, she's asking that you ONLY enter to win one if you are planning to participate in The Literate Housewife's online book club.

Sounds like a good reason to try an online book club! I'd be curious to see how a club works online; I've led my in-person club for years. What a great way to talk books with like-minded readers.

Read all the details (about the give and a link to the book club) via this link.

The Wednesday Sisters

Here's another book getting a lot of buzz right now: Meg Waite Clayton's The Wednesday Sisters.

Bookish Ruth has a copy to share with you, and it's a book she's saying she really liked. Stay tuned for her review (a comment on it will earn you an extra entry to the contest!).

Read all about it and enter via this link.

The Gargoyle

Dawn at She's Too Fond of Books dropped me an e-mail, asking me to post about this contest. Somehow, she wound up with two ARC copies of The Gargoyle (I'm jealous!) and while she's reading one, she'd like to pass the other copy along.

Have you been hearing the buzz about this book? Hard to miss, isn't it?

We have until August 22 to enter, and she hasn't listed any geographical restrictions, so I'm encouraging all our international readers to enter (I'm evil, I know. Dawn, if this wasn't your intent, let me know and I'll make it up to you. But remember, I'm evil!), too. Read the instructions carefully; there are ways to earn extra entries...

Enter via this link, and have a good reason why you want to read this buzzing book.

Amazon money!

Over at Random Wonder, you're being invited to talk in the comments about your favorite author (and a bit more). One winner will receive a $20 e-mail certificate to Amazon, which is a cool deal.

Hurry, though. You only have until midnight on August 10.

Enter via this link.

Rebecca at The Inside Cover has been given a copy of the new Joshua Henkin novel, Matrimony. It's being released in paperback on August 26, and that's the day that Rebecca will close the contest and pick a winner.

Like many cool book bloggers, she's offering extra chances to win. She's also got links to more about Henkin, including past posts she's written about the man. I, myself, have read his earlier Swimming Across the Hudson and let me tell you, he's an author to watch.
