She's got five copies, thanks to the publisher -- which means US and Canada only, and no PO Boxes. YOU have until January 9.

Charity for Darfur!

Check out this e-mail:

Wondering if you have a way to share with your Book Blog a Holiday campaign going on to raise funds for books for Darfur refugees? The campaign is -- give $1 for each book received as a holiday gift -- and the website is: Bookwish. Would certainly appreciate your helping to spread the word. We're 100% volunteer staffed; 100% of funds raised by this campaign for direct book related aid for Darfur refugees. Thanks so much. Happy Holidays.

Heck, I just posted at my main blog about how easy it is to make a difference. The timing here couldn't be better.

I hope you'll think about chipping in.

If you're doing a list of your top reads of 2008, be sure to send us the permalink to your post! I'll post the list somewhere around the new year and we can compare, contrast, and get ready to bring a great big list to our nearest independent bookstore...

Use the handy-dandy Win a Book e-mail, okay? That's Winabook at Westofmars dot com. Please don't use Susan's personal e-mail; things have a habit of getting buried there.

Thanks!

Brenda Janowitz two-fer

S. Krishna's got the goods, and are they good!

She's been given the chance -- by author Brenda Janowitz herself -- to give away a nice little package featuring Ms. Janowitz's books, Scot on the Rocks and Jack with a Twist.

You'll have to work a little bit for your entries, but these books sound worth it (S. provides a link to her reviews. Use those links, gang!).

You have until January 4, but get busy now while the kids are off school and you need something to distract yourself before you get mad about the crayon on the walls... yes, you'd thought your teenagers knew better...

Bookshelf Cleaning!

Alyce at At Home with Books is having a bookshelf cleaning event! I guess she's got to make room for all the good stuff that stuffed her stocking, which is what makes any gift-giving holiday special. Books as gifts. Oh, the mere thought makes me purr...

Anyway, Alyce is giving away four books, Dark Pursuit by Brandilyn Collins, Queen of Oblivion by Giles Carwyn & Todd Fahnestock, Where Am I Wearing? by Kelsey Timmerman, Dating da Vinci by Malena Lott.

Tell her which one you want, and do a variety of other things to earn up to five entries.

This is a US-Canada only contest. Sorry, gang. But I hear there will be more of these gives in the future... maybe if you international people ask real nice? (Well, it'll be up to Alyce. Keep me out of it!)

You have until January 11.

The Reincarnationist

Lenore, of Presenting Lenore fame, was kind enough to drop us an e-mail on Saturday (when we were busy recovering from illnesses and nights out, among other things). It seems she's got quite the doozy of a pre-Christmas contest going on.

MJ Rose is visiting, and we all know MJ Rose doesn't do things small. That's part of her amazing success. Thus, Lenore says (in her own words):

The grand prize winner will get a two book prize pack with a paperback copy of The Reincarnationist and a hardcover copy of MJ Rose’s latest release The Memorist (which I am in the middle of now and enjoying even more). I will also give away one paperback of the Reincarnationist for every 20 people who enter the giveaway (up to 5 copies!)

So who can get in on this? ANYONE.

You see, the grand prize is restricted to the US and Canada residents only.

Crystal and Lady Vampire's Contest

I got an e-mail from Crystal, alerting me to a cool joint contest she's running with the Lady Vampire. They are offering the following:

Lady V’s Goodies:
PRINT-"I'm Dreaming of some White Chocolate" by Rhea

PRINT-"If Only in My Dreams" by Wendy Markham

Crystal’s Goodies: PDFs
Bad Boy Cowboy by Carol Lynne
Fantasy Man by Summer Jordan
Hunting Diablo by Ellie Tremayne
Secret Santa by Jamie Hill
Vows of a Vampire by Ann Cory

So. Some print, some .pdfs in there. Crystal says she's bought them specifically for this contest, so there are no sharing issues (you know you're not supposed to share e-books, right? That it's considered piracy and makes Susan jump up and down and yelp, "Napster Bad" like some Camp Chaos cartoon, right?)

Divine Justice

Ruthie over at Books Books and More Books is in a giving mood (or so she claims. I think she's going to keep ALL THREE copies of David Baldacci's Divine Justice for herself. For no reason other than .. uhh...)

You're not buying that, right? Ruthie wants to share those three audio books with anyone in the US or Canada who isn't hobbled to a PO Box (like I am).

Check it out at her blog between now and December 31, also known as New Year's Eve.

Mommy I'm Still Here: Raising Children with Bipolar Disorder

I'm not sure from this title if it's the parent or the child who has bipolar, but my friend Candie knows. She's giving this book to one US person, and there's a link to her review.

Once again, the book is titled Mommy I'm Still Here: Raising Children with Bipolar Disorder. It was written by Kate McLaughlin, and Candie's got a link to her review.

You have until December 31. Get busy!

Dawn is entirely too fond of books. She is. That's good news for us bibliophiles, though, because now she's got three copies of Outliers -- in audio form. Written by Malcolm Gladwell, this book has been making the rounds. And if you've needed something to listen to during your morning commute (because, let's face it, morning radio is aimed at people who use fewer brain cells than us readers do), check out Dawn's give.

Be sure to read Dawn's post; it's really interesting.

Tsunami by Gordon Gumpertz

Living in California, earthquakes and tsunamis are two natural disasters we have be prepared for. As recently as November 2006, Crescent City was hit with a tsunami. According to L. Frank Baum, if you're in California, the best way to get to Oz is via earthquake. I've been through a number of quakes but so far I haven't ended up there!

With natural disasters in mind, I'm offering Gordon Gumpertz's novel Tsunami for a giveaway. To enter you need to think of your favorite natural disaster book. Remember, you must recommend a book to get an entry.

To enter, please see the post at Puss Reboots, a Book Review a Day.

Two Reasons, two books

Popin has emerged from her lair. It was her 200th post that brought her out -- 200 posts is quite a feat, as most of you know.

AND with Eid set to begin soon (Hey, Popin, what's the date of its start?), it seemed like a good time to celebrate.

You can win a copy of either The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd or The Rest Falls Away, by Colleen Gleason.

I've read both books. You can't go wrong. However, I'm a total Colleen Gleason fan, so if I can influence you one way or the other... (and don't worry. I have two autographed copies of the Gleason book in question here!)

This is an international contest, although Popin's going to use the cheapest shipping available. Cheap shipping = more books to give away.

I've known Dewey since around the time she started blogging. I don't remember how we met or what brought us together, but what a great woman. It was almost sad to see her blog grow in popularity because she had less time to hang around the Meet and Greet with me. I liked having her there. She had a level-headedness that I wished for. And her knowledge of books...

Like you guys, I'm in mourning (although my shock's not quite so bad; I'd known she had health issues, although never what they were nor quite how bad). We've lost a good person, a true champion of the written word.

May we all do our best to continue the great literary deeds she taught us about. And may we even surpass them. And the community she brought together. Oh, what a tragedy to lose that. We can't let that happen. We just can't.

Rest easy, Dewey. I know you're watching us. I hope you approve.

Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual

Ahh, so this explains why I saw Bobbi Brown on the Today Show while at The Club this morning. She has a book out!

If you don't know who Bobbi Brown is, you don't know makeup. We're talking one of THE experts here, folks. Not to mention one of the top-of-the-line makeup companies.

BermudaOnion's been given the green light to give three copies of this awesome book away. It's a publisher-sponsored give, so that means US and Canada only, and no PO Boxes.

You have until December 10 to enter, but why wait? Beauty is only skin deep, remember. It's what's inside that counts.

But having it outside sure makes me feel good.

Off the Menu

Anna truly IS eccentric.

Yep, I'm talking about our bud, Anna from Diary of an Eccentric, who just now e-mailed me and said, "I can't believe I forgot to e-mail you about this contest!"

Me, either, Anna. I also can't believe I didn't catch it in my reader.

Why should YOU care? Well, because Anna's cool. Because it shows you how vital the e-mails you send us really are.

And because you only have two days left to enter Anna's contest for Christine Son's Off the Menu.

And because you don't want to miss the cool guest post by Ms. Son.

Better get moving. Oh, and don't forget to send e-mail to your favorite book hook-up place...

Matrimony Sightings

Author Joshua Henkin wants you to have a Matrimonial holiday. Or maybe to appreciate your spouse a bit more; you'd have to ask him.

Anyway, here are some spots around the Net where you'll be able to find him this week:

Janel's Jumble, with a review (and links to other reviews, too)

Up for Grabs has two autographed copies.

Giving Reading a Chance has a copy and all sorts of great links -- and has embedded a video of Mr. Henkin. Check it out!

Tanabata, a longtime reader and new contributor, also has some Matrimony love. While the contest is closed, you can check out links to other reviews. This is always a great way to check out a new blog and potential friend...

Whew. Thanks to Josh Henkin for sending us all these links. More will be coming soon, so stay tuned!
