Any Given Doomsday

It's time for Lori's Reading Corner's next giveaway. This time it will be an ARC of Any Given Doomsday (The Phoenix Chronicles) by Lori Handeland.

Here's a little bit about the book:

Elizabeth Phoenix once used her unique skills as a psychic to help in
the Milwaukee Police Department’s fight against injustice. But when
Liz’s foster mother is found viciously murdered—and Liz is discovered
unconscious at the scene—her only memory of the crime comes in the form
of terrifying dreams...of creatures more horrific than anything Liz has
seen in real life. What do these visions mean? And what in the world do
they have to do with her former lover, Jimmy Sanducci?
While the police question Jimmy in the murder, Jimmy opens Liz’s eyes
to a supernatural war that has raged since the dawn of time in which
innocent people are hunted by malevolent beings disguised as humans.
Only a chosen few have the ability to fight their evil, and Jimmy
believes Liz is among them. Now, with her senses heightened, new
feelings are rising within Liz—ones that re-ignite her dangerous
attraction to Jimmy. But Jimmy has a secret that will rock Liz to her
core…and put the survival of the human race in peril.

All the Numbers

You guys must have been very nice to Bonnie at Redlady's Reading Room. She's not only doing her second giveaway, but author Judy Merrill Larsen contacted her about doing it. How cool is that? AND she's autographing the book, too. Cool!

The book is called All the Numbers and Redlady has posted links to her review and to Judy's website. Check 'em out.

This is a US and Canada-only contest. Sorry, folks. Until one of us comes up with a workable business plan that'll get books to other countries for something less than the cost of a year's supply of chocolate, many contests are limited like this. If you international people saw the prices we face... (yeah, and your gasoline costs more. I know. I know.)

The Self-Esteem Trap

Is Fate talking? I'm having an e-mail discussion about self-esteem with a friend at the moment.

Me aside, maybe self-esteem's on your mind, too. Or maybe it should be, especially if you have adolescents (or soon-to-be moody, hormonal creatures) in your life -- not just in your home, folks.

Booking Mama's giving you a chance to think about this issue, too. She's got FIVE copies of The Self-Esteem Trap, written by Polly Young-Eisendrath. Five.

Because this give is sponsored by Hachette, it's restricted to US and Canada addresses only -- and ONLY if you don't have a PO Box.

Be sure to read Booking Mama's great review. It's very thoughtful and she's not afraid to turn the light of examination on herself. Kudos for that bravery.

You have until October 3 to enter. Get busy. Our kids need us.

(Well, except for mine, who hear, "If you don't do your best, I'm not going to fight for you" maybe more than they want to!)

Discipline

Nah, not gonna dig on the title.

My friend Candy at My Raves is giving away a copy of Discipline, written by Paco Ahlgren. The contest runs until 15 October, which seems really far away to me, but then again, I still think it's the beginning of September.

Also, her contest for Wheeling the Deal for Chip Jacobs is still going on.

Check 'em out at the sticky post. Use this link and click on through for more specifics.

Pick Your Prize!

Lisa, who doesn't live all that far from West of Mars and who blogs at Minds Alive on the Shelves, has FIVE books for you to pick from.

Check out this twist on the way she's doing things:
For every 12 entrants, I'll give away another one of these books. That means all I need is is 24 entrants to give away 2 books; if I'm fortunate enough to get 60 entrants, I'll give away all 5! So spread the word and increase your chances to win!

Did you notice that David Liss book? Huh? Did you? Susan's a fan of David Liss; check him out when you get a moment. Check out the other four as well; I can't read them clearly enough to list them out for you and yeah, I AM that lazy!

If you're in the US and Canada, you have until September 23. If you're from somewhere else, move on to the next post. Sorry. I know. We American book lovers spend WAY too much money on books and not enough money on postage overseas!

What Should I read?

Teresa at Shelf Love has a problem. She doesn't know what to read next. (Not a problem I ever have. Nope. Not any of us around here at Win a Book.)

To solve this problem, she's decided to throw another of her little contests. Here's what she had to say:

Take a look at my TBR List and make a comment on this post telling me which book on my shelf you think I should read next. At the beginning of October, I’ll choose one suggestion at random, read the book, post a review, and pass the book along to the lucky person who suggested it. The deadline to enter is September 30.

There are a few caveats, so be sure to check them out. Use the link to her TBR pile and have some fun choosing!

Author News: Rebecca Drake and Heather Terrell

My weekly BookReporter.com newsletter just popped into my inbox and there, for all the world to see, is a mention of my friend and fellow Pittsburgh writer, Rebecca Drake.

Interestingly, while Ms. Drake is featured in the newsletter, she's not on the website. Yet a third Pittsburgher is: Heather Terrell.

Definitely two authors worth watching.

Star Wars Republic Commando

Blood of the Muse is at it again. A signed copy of Star Wars Republic Commando Hard Contact (which might need to win an award for the longest book title that makes very little sense unless you're in the know). The author is one Karen Traviss and may I just say how nice it is to see more women writing these science fiction series novels?

Go here for the details.

...On a completely unrelated note

Our friends at the Midnight Moon Cafe (another of Susan's favorite lurking spots) have reminded us that today, September 19, is International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Go visit them; they've got some great links that'll take you to proper Pirate Lingo.

(and we're talking Pirates of the High Sea, not those guys who put on black and gold (and red? I still don't get that one) and try to hit baseballs into the river.)

Have fun today. Talk Like a Pirate!

Retrieval

Shauney's got a cool sounding one, with a twist at the end of the contest.

The book is called Retrieval. It's written by Jeanie London. Shauney's copy is gently loved and registered at BookCrossing, although there's no need to journal it if you don't want to (hint: it's fun!).

Check out Shauney's twist to earn extra entries. As someone who's familiar with what she's seeking, you're in for some fun.

Free!

I've mentioned before that Tor.com is giving away free e-books if you register for their newsletter.

Now, in a fit of absolutely perfect timing, they are giving away the book I just finished on Sunday night and haven't yet had a chance to rave about.

War for the Oaks, written by Emma Bull.

Holy smoke, what a fantastic read.

If you're not registered, do so. (Although I'm a little miffed they seem to have lost mine. Okay, more than a little.)

It's the best book you'll read in a LONG time.

Matthew Stover Set

Fantasy Book Critic has another set for us.

This time, it's Matthew Stover's Heroes Die and Caine Black Knife. (Wow, those are disparate titles... or so they seem. Read what FBC has to say about them and it'll make sense.)

Maybe if enough people grab onto these installments, someone will feel it's a good idea to put the first back into print?

We can hope.

The Reality Dysfunction

Pat's Fantasy Hotlist is the place to be again.

I couldn't say it better, myself, so in Pat's own words...

The North American editions of all three volumes of Peter F. Hamilton's The Night's Dawn trilogy were all split into two installments when they were initially released. Finally, Orbit is re-issuing each volume as one single trade paperback edition, beginning with The Reality Dysfunction. This series put Hamilton on the map and led him to become the bestselling science fiction author in the UK.

Follow Pat's entry directions carefully so you don't get disqualified.

This Week at Stone Soup...

Katrina's turning up the heat this week. Not just one, but TWO first edition hardbacks for you!

The first is Martha O'Connor's The Bitch Posse. I studied fiction with Mr. Martha (around the time they were hooking up, too) and I've heard nothing but good things about Martha herself -- and her fiction. A definite must-have.

The other is a book I know nothing about, so when you win, be sure to tell me everything I need to fix that. It's Lost in the Forest, by Sue Miller.

Hey, I sort of like her name.

In Search of Silence

Now HERE is something we don't see every day. It's poetry!

If you follow my main blog, you'll know I sometimes post poetry under the guise of a dude named Roadie Poet. In short, I dig poetry.

So, apparently, does my friend Penelope, whose blog Library at the END of the Universe is hosting this giveaway.

This is a single-author collection of poems. (As opposed to an anthology, where there are more than one contributor. You get the idea.) The author's name is Chris Roe. Remember that now.

The only downside is that this contest is only open to the US and Canada. (Stupid shipping prices -- bring back surface mail!) You have until the 30th of September, but you're not going to wait. Not when there are many cool ways to earn entries, one of which could very well include my own Roadie Poet.

(not bad for some shameless plugging, huh?)

Enter via this link. You'll be glad you did. Chris Roe writes better poems than I do.

The Bride of Castle Dracula

Amberkatze is back online! We here at Win a Book are wishing her the best in her new real-life dig, but c'mon. Let's face it. We want to hear which cool author she's got visiting and which cool book she's talking about.

This week is another pleasant surprise. It's author Marta Acosta, whose new book The Bride of Castle Dracula is coming out September 16.

Check out the cool interview with Ms. Acosta; Amberkatze does some of the best around. And might there be a chance for you to start reading this cool new series?

The Heretic's Daughter

Caribou's Mom has got quite a nice give happening, herself. It starts today and runs through September 17. And she provides lots of those educational links, too. Gotta love those.

The book is called The Heretic's Daughter, and it was written by Kathleen Kent. That's surely a provocative title...

US and Canada only, and to enter, you need to do some research and leave a fact!

Black Wolf on Tour

Hey, Susan here. I've decided to begin to dig myself out from the stuff that's piled up here in the past month.

That means a belated contest to celebrate my review of Black Wolf on Tour, written by Magnolia Belle. The review was posted, as all my reviews are, on Front Street Reviews. I wish I had a permalink to the review, but no one's taught me that trick yet...

The contest is open worldwide until next Thursday, the 18th of September.

C'mon over and check it out. Use this link.

The Professors' Wives' Club

Woo hoo! That book title is even punctuated correctly!

I got an e-mail just now that our name was passed on by another Win a Book regular. Thanks, guys. Personal referrals make us feel like a million bucks.

Redlady at Redlady's Reading Room has only been blogging for a few months now, but she knows how to make a splash: she got author Joanne Rendell to donate an autographed copy of Ms. Rendell's new books, The Professors' Wives' Club.

Redlady may be new to blogging, but she's savvy. Her review is right below the contest, and she provides a link to the author's website. Nice moves, both -- the more information we readers have about a book and an author, the better able we are to judge if this is up our alley (although I see time and again that many of you are pleasantly surprised by some of the books you encounter. More power to you guys for that!).

This is a US/Canada only contest, due to shipping costs. (Really, when will the Post Office realize that all that talk of the world being one isn't just hype?)

You have until Sunday September 21. Check Redlady's blog for ways to earn extra chances to win; one of them is really quite interesting.

The Lace Reader

Icedream over at Reading in Appalachia dropped us an e-mail (thanks, Icedream!) about her new contest.

She's got an ARC copy (HER ARC copy, if you keep track of things like that) of The Lace Reader, by Brunonia Barry to pass along. Keep it moving, you know...

But she'd like to spark some discussion, so, in her own words...

In the past I have kept entries pretty simple but this time I am asking something of you, dear reader. I currently live in West Virginia, it wasn't always my home but it is my place of birth and "where I'm from", so I have always had an interest in Appalachian regional literature. So to enter in this giveaway I would like for you to tell me about a book that you read and enjoyed that is set in Appalachia. If you can't remember or haven't read a book that is set in Appalachia then you can go through my widget on the right called "Appalachian Regional Lit." and choose one of those that you would be interested in reading and tell me why.

Being from outside Pittsburgh, Susan is obliged to make a West Virginia joke. But she's seen too much beautiful land in that state, so it ain't gonna happen. (So long as the WVU students don't drag their couches into the street and set them on fire again).

This is, regrettably, a US-only contest. You have until September 30.

And check out the cool map!

Broken

Yes, Broken is the title of a book. It's not a description of my brain. Usually.

It's our friend Dar at Peeking Between the Pages you need to concern yourself with (as opposed to me and my brain. Totally not worth your time), as she's got a cool give she e-mailed us about.

And whoa. Dar is totally into the author of Broken, a man named Daniel Clay. As this is his debut novel, let's hope that enough people talk about Mr. Clay so that he gets lots of chances to publish more great books.

She wants to help make that happen, so she has TEN copies of Broken to share. Ten, ladies and gentlemen. That's quite generous on the part of ... whoever was kind enough to donate these books.

Dar is also kind enough to provide lots of links, so that you can follow them and catch her enthusiasm about Mr. Clay and his book.

You have until 20 September to check it all out and enter. Yep, there are chances of multiple entries but you can only win once. US and Canada only, please!

The Choice/The Almost Moon

Anna at Diary of an Eccentric was kind enough to use our handy-dandy e-mail (you should follow her example!).

She's got TWO cool titles -- and five copies of each. That means ten books! (Right? Two times five... Uhhh... fingers... yeah. Ten.)

The titles aren't exactly obscure, either. They are The Choice, the new one from Nicholas Sparks, and The Almost Moon, Alice Sebold's new novel.

This is another giveaway sponsored by Hachette, so that means US and Canada only, and no PO Boxes (they need to get over that, eh?).

You have until September 30. Wow. That's, like, 20 days. (Uhh... fingers...) This contest will NOT take you 20 days to enter (assuming my math is right, which is always questionable).

Be sure to tell Anna which title you want -- or if you're greedy and want both. She won't mind. She said you could ask.

Read on for extra chances to win and all that.

No Humans Involved

Oooh, baby. Blood of the Muse has one that's making me drool.

Can you say Women of the Otherworld? Can you say Kelley Armstrong?

Can you follow the entry directions -- and be sure to tell me what you think when you win and read this book? (I'm still stuck on Dime Store Magic; need to get it, need to read it!)

Can you use this link?

I thought you could.

After the Fire

Cheryl at Cheryl's Book Nook dropped us an e-mail, letting us know that starting today (That's Wednesday, folks), she's been given permission from Hachette Books to share FIVE copies of After the Fire: A True Story of Love and Survival, written by Robin Gaby Fisher.

Cheryl's got her review posted right there for you to check out. This sounds like a moving but heavy book -- it deals with the fire in the residence halls at Seton Hall University a few years back. I had friends who went to Seton Hall and who worked at the school's landmark college radio station, WSOU. The fire touched me even though my friends were long graduated.

Anyway, go check out what Cheryl's got to say about this book.

Because Hachette is picking up the shipping, this contest is restricted to the US and Canada only. You have until Saturday, 20 September to enter. Don't wait.

Jennifer Estep Goes Visiting

I've been trying to keep an eye on the antics of my bud Jennifer Estep -- she's been all over the place lately, promoting her latest book, Jinx -- but it's been hard.

Our good friends at Yankee Romance Reviewers are making it easy. Jennifer's dropping by to see them today.

If you want to see what I've been raving about, be sure to stop in and say hello! Tell Jennifer and the YRR gang that I sent you.

(and if you like, The Good, The Bad, and the Unread has been posting excerpts of the first two Bigtime novels. Go dig 'em out of the archives.)

Breaking Dawn

Been over to J. Kaye's lately? Are a Stephanie Meyer fan?

Yep, it's true. Breaking Dawn is one of the books J. Kaye will be raffling off.

Stop in and see her for full details. Be prepared to say hello, but you should do that anyway. It's rude to stare at someone and not acknowledge them, you know!

This Week at Stone Soup...

The Monday giveaway at Stone Soup this week is another Anyone Pick: anything under $25 (excluding shipping) that you want.

Katrina rules, doesn't she?

Leave her a message with the name of the book you want by Sunday... you know the drill over there by now, I'm sure. Still, it's always a good idea to read the rules, just in case...

Do some good in the world!

I got an e-mail just now from the ladies at Shooting Stars Mag. They've got a really cool-sounding charity gig happening and they wanted me to share the word with you guys.

I love charity. I love being able to make a difference. So, copied directly from the blog, is what's up here:

We're going to be holding a charity event called Leave a Mark, auctioning off "marked up" copies of author's books. Tons of authors are participating, writing notes and post-its all throughout copies of their books.

One hundred percent of the proceeds is going to go to First Book.

Read more about it via this link. And stay tuned; hopefully they'll keep us in the loop and there will be more posts to come...

The Kings of Innocence

Sandra at Fresh Ink (these are new digs; we know her as Posthumouse -- she's moving!) dropped us an e-mail to tell us she's got a new give for her new digs.

The book is called The Kings of Innocence, and it was written by Michael Burns.

You have until Wednesday, September 17th to either leave her a comment, telling her why you'd like to read this, or else blog about it and send new people her way to explain why they'd like to read this book.

As she puts it: It's not about numbers, it's about conversation.

Amen to that.

Room for Love

(Oh, Geez. For a second there, I thought I was posting to my other blog! Oops!)

*ahem*

S. Krishna's got one of THE coolest names ever. And now, there's a cool give to go along with it. Room for Love, by Andrea Meyer, is the book she's ready to share with a new friend, and she provides a lovely link to her review of it. Just in case you don't have her in your reader.

The rules have changed a bit: you don't have to check back to see if you've won. Just be sure to leave some contact information instead!

You have until Monday, September 15, so get moving... extra chances to enter, too.

A Random Sort of Contest

Amanda at Life and Times of a "New" New Yorker dropped us an e-mail to say she's doing a random sort of giveaway.

(She thinks no one would want these books. Let's show her she's wrong. 'Cause, you know, they ARE good books.)

They are:

Atonement, by Ian McEwan
Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston
The Light of Day, by Graham Swift
The Diana Chronicles, by Tina Brown

Leave your comment about which book you'd like by Friday, September 12.

The Heretic's Daughter

Shana at Literarily was lucky (?) enough to wind up with two ARC copies of The Heretic's Daughter, written by Kathleen Kent. So she'd like to pass one on to a new, happy home where it's hopefully the only child.

Move fast; you only have until Friday the 12th. There are a few options for entries; take advantage of 'em.

Mrs. Lieutenant: A Sharon Gold Novel

Another day, another new friend in our inbox! I love this; it's like magic.

The new friend is Serena at Savvy Verse and Wit. And man, does she have an interesting post featuring the author of Mrs. Lieutenant: A Sharon Gold Novel, Phyllis Zimbler Miller. Ms. Miller decided to self-publish her book, and she discusses the reasons why (although, as a reader, do you care who publishes a book, so long as it's good?).

At the end of this neat article comes the contest. There is a question that Serena would like you to answer, so please make sure you do. There are also other chances for entries, too.

You have until this Sunday, the 14th of September.

Have fun and use this link.
