Kosher by Design Lightens up (and) Crafting Jewish

Lisa, at Minds Alive on the Shelves, has a giveaway that's making Susan drool. Two Jewish-themed books -- but you don't need to be Jewish to appreciate either one of them.

The first book is Kosher By Design Lightens up, written by Susie Fishbein. If you've ever wondered what it means to cook kosher, keep kosher, or even more basically what IS kosher, this is the cookbook series for you! I have two in the series and the Tour Manager and I whip out the recipes in these books for any occasion. With Kosher By Design Lightens Up, you're getting some lower-fat options. And who couldn't do with a little bit less fat (Susan asks with an organic toaster pastry sticking out of her mouth!) in their diet???

Crafting Jewish sounds like the book for anyone who likes to make things. Lisa describes this book as a great craft book for anyone, even though all the crafts seem to revolve around the Jewish holidays. Including some this Jew never thought would lend well to crafts. But then, I've met two-year-olds who are better with visual arts than I am.

Explore a new culture, learn something. Maybe tear some walls down between our religions. And in the meantime, cook up a storm and craft up a new artistic vision.

You can't go wrong.

This is a US-only contest, due to shipping costs.

Use this link before January 30.

Quantum Buddhism

Only J. Kaye would turn up a book called Quantum Buddhism...

Btw, Quantum Buddhism was written by Francois Lepine.

A Northern Light

Melissa Walker has a doozy for her Win it Wednesday this week. The book is A Northern Light, and it was written by Jennifer Donnelly. This book won the Printz award and if the one Printz winner that I've read is any indication, that means it's fantastic.

Unfortunately, I'm telling you about this AFTER you could have joined some talk -- and the author herself -- about the book, but better late than never.

Check it all out via this link.

This One is Mine

Tara, at Tara's View on Books, is getting all the books that, I swear, ought to be coming to me. Yep, she's got ANOTHER rock and roll themed book (although I'd like to gloat about winning the last one she had!).

This one is called This One is Mine, and it was written by Maria Semple.

Tara is passing along her ARC copy, and you'll get to see first-hand why it's a good thing publishers make ARC copies... about 30 pages were bound into the book upside-down. It's been fixed in the final copy, of course, but Tara's offering you a real collector's item -- or a novelty, depending on whether or not you like the book, of course.

Check it all out via this link. You have until January 29.

Author Appearance: Jocelynn Drake

Calling all Comic-Con fans!!! Especially those of you planning to head up to New York for the New York Comic-Con (on Feb. 8 in particular). Author Jocelynn Drake will be sitting on a panel with Kim Harrison, Vicki Pettersson, Jeaniene Frost, and myself. They'll be discussing, what else, Kick Ass Female Authors & Their Killer Heroines.

That totally makes me want to go.

Afterward, Jocelynn, at least, will be doing a book signing.

So if you're in the area or if you'd like an excuse to be in the area, stop in and say hi to Jocelynn and the rest of the gang. I've met a number of them; classy ladies who really know their stuff.

Wings of Wrath (and) Feast of Souls

Pat's Fantasy Hotlist has a two-fer happening right now -- sort of. The give is for Wings of Wrath 'cause it's the new release, but if you haven't read Feast of Souls, the first book in the series, the publisher will throw in a mass-market-sized copy of that, as well. (The books are written by CS Friedman, by the way)

That's very awesome of the publisher. Yay, Daw Books!

(Because we all know it's hard to fall into a series in the middle.)

Read the rules and follow directions carefully. There are five copies heading out to happy readers; why not be one of those happy people?

Ransom My Heart

Ti at Book Chatter and other stuff just dropped me a note. And I mean JUST. (Awesome timing, lady!)

She's got a copy of the new Meg Cabot book, Ransom My Heart. In fact, it's Ti's copy, and it sounds like she reads books the way Bridget and I do: so gently, you can't tell they've been read. That lets you pass it along more friends, and I'm all about that. Books are meant to be shared.

Anyway, this is a US and Canada-only contest, due to pesky things like MONEY. Not that no one knows much about that...

You have until January 31 to enter. Check it all out via Book Chatter, by using this link.

Phantom Limb

Over at Carol's Notebook, Carol has fallen in love with a new book. It's called Phantom Limb, and it was written by Theresa Kishkan.

It was a hard decision for Carol to make, as it always is when you read a great book, but she finally decided she'd rather share this great book of essays with someone who might love it as much as she did. (Yay, Carol!)

Go on over to her blog. Check out her thoughtful review. If you're in the US, tell Carol why you want to read this -- really TALK to her, don't just spurt platitudes. Anyone can do that, and gosh darn it, your name's not Anyone, now is it? (Yes, that's my character Trevor talking again.)

You have until January 22. And if you missed it, this is a US-only contest. Sorry, gang. Mailing across the borders is stupidly expensive.

Guest Blogger: Jessica Andersen

One of the best things about the Romantic Times Convention is meeting the authors. I can't say I met a single unpleasant author over the four days.

One of them is Jessica Andersen, who has such a coolness to her, I immediately wanted to be her friend.

You can see how and why as she guest blogs over at one of my favorite blogs, the Midnight Moon Cafe. She's discussing her new book, Dawn Keepers.

Use this link. Tell Cassandra and Tempest I sent you.

The Gate House

Sandra at Fresh Ink is starting off the new year by keeping busy. She's got a gently used copy of The Gate House, written by Nelson DeMille, to share with you -- and a guest post by one of her readers -- who happens to be a DeMille fan.

Because all bloggers like conversation in their comment trail, one way to gain an entry for this book is to tell Sandra what your favorite read of 2008 was. Or what your favorite DeMille novel to date is.

There are other ways to enter, too. Be sure to check them all out.

And because this is a large, heavy book, Sandra may use the Slow Boat to China method of mailing -- meaning she's going to use what's cheapest, so be aware that if you win, delivery may not be next-day. Or next-week. But hopefully it'll be next-month. (Although, back before the USPS eliminated the true Slow Boat method, it would routinely take my books six months to reach their destinations. What a way to make someone's day -- with a book they'd completely forgotten was coming to them!)

(Uhh, that last sentence was NOT sarcastic.)

Use this link to get to Sandra and The Gate House. You have until January 18.

Letters Between Us

Sandra at Fresh Ink dropped in to tell us about some adventures she's been having in the book world. We thought we'd share them with you.

But if not, there are other ways to enter for Sandra's own gently-read copy.

You have until January 25.

The Survivor's Club

Two of my all-time favorite reads have been written by a guy by the name of Ben Sherwood. It looks like Mr. Sherwood's back with a third novel, called The Survivor's Club. Except... I don't think it's a novel. And it's WAY different.

Can there be two Ben Sherwoods?

You can help me decide by dropping by The Book Czar, where an audio copy is up for grabs (US and Canada only, no PO Boxes). Three of you can have a copy of this new book.

The last day to enter is January 24. Use this link. Help me solve this mystery!

What I Saw and How I Lied

Melissa Walker's got her finger on the pulse of some pretty cool YA stuff. If you're into YA, you should add her to your reader.

Anyway, this week, she's got a signed copy of What I Saw and How I Lied, written by Judy Blundell, that's up for grabs. This book won the National Book Award, boys and girls, and you can get in on its secrets. (Apparently, it's hard to talk about without spoilers.)

Jack With a Twist

Say hello to Joanne Rendell, a blogger with no small amount of power (check out who's interviewed her. WOW!). Her blog is called Footnotes; be sure to check it out.

She's got a copy of Jack With a Twist, the new book from Brenda Janowitz. There's also a fun interview with Ms. Janowitz that had me laughing out loud, much to the alarm of the cat sitting by my right elbow.

Read it for yourself. Tell Joanne why you want to read the book, and it can be yours!

You have until January 16. I'm not seeing any mailing restrictions...

Books Ahoy!

Yes, it's true, Lisa at Books Ahoy has FIVE more copies of Sundays at Tiffany's, written by James Patterson and Grabrielle Charbonnet.

And yes, it's still true: copies are coming from the publisher, so winners are restricted to the US and Canada, with no way to reach us PO Box holders (blame the shipping companies for that one!).

You have until January 17, but don't delay. It's fun to say Books Ahoy!

J. Kaye is the ultimate in cool, if only because she's ready to pass along a copy of Hallie Ephron's Never Tell a Lie.

(Speaking of Hallie Ephron, she'll be in Pittsburgh this Friday night to lead a workshop sponsored by the local Sisters in Crime chapter. It's not too late to sign up, so if you'll be around, please go. I hate that I have to miss it.)

Back to J. Kaye. You can enter her raffle for Never Tell a Lie via this link.

Sundays at Tiffany's

Luanne at A Bookworm's World dropped me the funniest e-mail. "Get ready!" she said, "There's a new big publicity push!"

Little did she know I'd already posted the first one!

The book is James Patterson's latest, Sundays at Tiffany's, and from my bulging inbox, this is getting a lot of attention (although I'm not sure WHY. Hello? James Patterson? He hardly needs a publicity push to sell his 400,000 copies. No, that figure is probably not an exaggeration, unless it's low). Maybe it's to introduce us to cowriter Gabrielle Charbonnet?

Whatever, Luanne's got FIVE copies for you. Of course, they are from the publisher, so that means US and Canada only, and no PO Boxes. Extra entries, too.

You have until Monday, January 26.

Because it's coming from the publisher... do I need to continue? US and Canada only and no PO Boxes... You know the drill. And yes, I'm finally typing Canada right on the first try (for awhile there, there were too many Ns and not enough As.)

Shelley Adina Trio

Kelly at Enroute to Life has popped up in the Win a Book mailbox again.

She's starting 2009 with style, hosting author Shelley Adina as part of a book tour -- and offering ONE SET of three books written by Ms. Adina. These books are the first three in a YA series: It's all About Us, The Fruits of my Lipstick, and Be Strong and Curvaceous.

Because this awesome intro to a new series is coming from the publisher, we ask that it be restricted to the US and Canada only, and no one with a PO Box can enter. Their rules; that's the royal WE I'm using above. Don't yell at me!

You have until January 18 to enter.

Breathing Out the Ghost

Anna, over at Diary of an Eccentric, has THREE copies of Breathing out the Ghost, written by Kirk Curnutt, to share -- and an interview! (A really good interview; Mr. Curnutt gives great answers.)

It sounds like there might be some content in here that's a bit hard to swallow. Be sure to read Anna's review carefully to see if this is something you'd want to read. (But I suspect the bad guy gets his in the end. Isn't that how the best books end?)

The contest is open world-wide until January 12.

2008 Reading Roundups

I said I'd post a list of 2008 Reading Roundups. I'd meant to do it sooner, but I was held up waiting for one list from someone, which became two posts... which I finally finished.

If you read my first post, you'll understand why. I'll list mine last.

On to the lists!

Not sure what to read in 2009? Overwhelmed by the millions of books out there to choose from? Check out these lists from friends and friends-to-be -- and may 2009 bring nothing but page-turners.

Raffles at J. Kaye's!

Not to dis any of the raffles J. Kaye is setting up, but I'm going to lump them into one post for my own sanity...

If you are new here or you've been under a rock, J. Kaye has this book blog. That's not unusual; almost everyone we post about here has some sort of blog. What IS unusual is that once J. Kaye reads a book, she passes it on. Not through a book trading service like some of us (uhh, that'd be me), but directly to you guys, who are Win a Book readers. As well as those who aren't cool enough to hang here with us. (The nerve!)

Here are three of her latest offerings. The title is the link to enter.

Obedience, by Will Lavender

The Good-to-Go Cookbook, by Kathleen Cannata Hanna

Walking Through Walls, by Philip Smith

Remember, enter THERE, NOT here. Use the above links.

A Serpent in Turquoise

Shaunie's one happy gal. She's read this book and is darn pleased with herself. It combines some of her favorite subjects, she finished it time to complete a reading challenge... hey, if you're Shaunie, life is good.

She'd like to pass this book on to a new friend. Because any book that's this good to Shaunie ought to be good to you, right?

You have until January 17.

Oh, the book? It's called A Serpent in Turquoise, and it was written by Peggy Nicholson. It has a Bookcrossing label on it; while there's never any obligation to journal a book with one of these labels, we Bookcrossers sure appreciate hearing what you think of something. Getting word of a book read awhile ago is always a pleasant surprise. Like when you get six chicken nuggets in your order instead of five.

Divine Justice

Monie at Reading with Monie dropped us a line early this morning (tell me you're in a different time zone than me!), letting us know about a contest for some David Baldacci. More specifically, for some Divine Justice, as dished out by Mr. Baldacci.

(I could use some of that in my life right now... *ahem*)

(Nope, it has nothing to do with any of you. Although I try not to, sometimes I have a real life.)

Anyhoo... back to Monie, 'cause she's the star around here right now. She's got the audio book of Divine Justice. That's TEN CDs, boys and girls. Wow. That's some involved listening.

Those are all the details she provides on the post, but she told ME ('cause I'm special and all) that the contest ends January 11, and is open WORLDWIDE.

Monie, you rock.
