Public Service Announcement:

Happy Halloween from all of us at Win a Book to all of you.

Feel free to send any left over peanut butter cups to Susan. Yep, that's the secret ingredient that makes her posts so much fun.

Be safe out there tonight... and happy reading!

(Stop on over at Susan's main blog to see what REALLY gets her all wound up. Nope, not peanut butter and chocolate, two great tastes that taste great together! The link's in the sidebar.)

Lydia Bennet's Story

Anna's not the only busy one this week (see post below if you're not following me). Serena over at Savvy Verse and Wit is, too.

She's got a copy of Lydia Bennet's Story, written by Jane Odiwe. Well, actually, she's got two again: her own gently-read ARC for an international friend, and a new copy from the publisher for a US or Canada person who doesn't have a PO Box.

Serena's cool to be doing this, so be sure to mention where you live when you enter. Don't assume... you know that old saying Ass + You + Me = Assume. Go on and tell her, even if you're the next door neighbor (and if you are, you should have already borrowed Serena's ARC copy and returned it by now! What are you doing entering a contest when you had such easy access to the book?).

Use this link before November 7.

Jesus Take the Wheel

Anna over at Diary of an Eccentric is smoking lately.

Now she's got a copy of Jesus Take the Wheel, written by Stuart Migdon. She's got some interesting things to say about it, and has gotten permission to post an essay from Mr. Migdon, as well. Sounds interesting, very interesting.

This contest is open world-wide. 'Cause, you know, Anna rocks. (She's sending me leftover Halloween candy to say thanks for that plug, too.)

Use this link before November 6 -- and don't forget the contact information!

A Jolly Good Fellow

Shana at Literarily is hopping lately, too. I really admire you book bloggers; you guys have lots of things going on and you don't drown in it all. And then there's me...

Anyway, Shana's fun today is a copy of the book A Jolly Good Fellow, written by Stephen V. Masse. It was actually published WAY back in 2007 (does your memory stretch that far back?), but sort of like the Internet, it doesn't matter when something appears. A good read is a good read. Besides, this one has a nice holiday theme to it without, as Shana says, resorting to the usual holiday cliches.

The Safety of Secrets

I dunno. I never thought secrets were safe things, but clearly author Delaune Michel doesn't agree. Or at least the title of this new book doesn't. Sometimes, books demand to be called something an author may not anticipate...

But enough about the genesis of a book. We should be talking about how YOU can read THIS one, The Safety of Secrets.

Serena at Savvy Verse and Wit has a copy to share with you. She's also got some great reviews and an invite to join a book club discussion of this book. Serena, you're awesome!

Unless you're like me and have a good friend who sent you a copy of MJ Rose's latest novel, The Reincarnationist, until now, you've had to pony up some cash for it. Lydia Bennet's Story

Anna over at Diary of an Eccentric dropped us a note, quite thankfully. She's got a cool interview with author Jane Odiwe up, in conjunction with her previous review of Ms. Odiwe's new book, Lydia Bennet's Story.

And to make it a cool multi-day event, Anna's got a copy of the book to share. It's coming directly from publisher Sourcebooks, so this is restricted to US and Canada addresses only (although they seem friendlier to PO Boxes than certain ... other... publishers. I hope that's truly the case).

You have until Friday, October 31 (known to many of us as Halloween, or All Hallow's Eve, or that goofy night when kids dress up and go beg chocolate all over the neighborhood from parents who'd rather keep it all to themselves). Be sure to let Anna know who your favorite Austen heroine is! (among other things Austen)

From Katrina at Stone Soup...

For today, we’re back to any book I’ve mentioned! It can be a book I’ve already given away, one I’ve referred to on the blog, something I’ve reviewed here or here, or any book on one of my three giveaway shelves. This includes the Stephanie Myer books, of course, the 12 books I listed last week, The Lace Reader, etc.

She's got links, of course, so you can look up all those books she's mentioned.

And we need to send her husband a thanks. He's outlawed her from buying any more hats. Not books, like many of our spouses. Hats.

Keep the books coming in (and out), Katrina!

Michelle Moran Extravaganza!

Alyce is indeed At Home with Books. Three of them, in fact. Two copies of The Heretic Queen and one copy of Nefertiti -- ALL signed by author Michelle Moran. Wow.

If you're wondering what the fuss is about, Alyce provides great links from her contest post. Use them 'cause you can leave a comment on any of them to earn a contest entry. (Nice thinking, Alyce!) And if Alyce's thought patterns aren't pleasant enough, this is a world-wide contest. Whee!

You have until 28 October, but don't delay. These are some of-the-moment books.

Halfway to the Grave/One Foot in the Grave

We just got mail from Books Books and More Books. Ruthie has author Jeanine Frost stopping in today for a Q&A. At the end, you can enter to win either of Ms. Frost's books: Halfway to the Grave or One Foot in the Grave.

Winners must be in the US or Canada only, but anyone should feel free to leave a comment on the post. 'Cause, you know, comments are cool and they'll make Ms. Frost feel loved.

You have until Oct. 24 to tell Ruthie which book you'd like. Sorry, but "both" isn't an option. (and "None" is rude, so don't go there)

Winning at Win a Book

Breeni and I have been discussing the idea of posting the winnings of our Win a Book readers. From time to time, you've told us that you've won something.

We like to celebrate, Breeni and I (and everyone else, too. I think Bridget is baking cookies for the party.). Which means we ought to celebrate the success we have in finding great new reads.

To get things started, here are some books that have come our way lately...

Breeni won "that Star Wars book she was trying to win."

Yeah, that's a quote from her e-mail to me. 'Nuff said, there...

And me, I won a copy of the new David Liss book, The Whiskey Rebels, from LisaLynne at Minds Alive on the Shelves. Whee! I love David Liss. When my book club read his Conspiracy of Paper, Mr. Liss and I e-mailed about it a bit. Nice guy.

Today's trip to the old PO Box turned out to be rather interesting, too. Waiting for me was a book from St. Martin's Press. No note. Just a book and a catalog from the MacMillan Publishers Reading Group Gold.

Now, I register my book club all over the place. I'm always on the lookout for new books to show my awesome group, and since we have a narrow focus (Jewish literature, or books by Jews that aren't necessarily about Jewish topics), any help I can get is welcome. I suspect that's how this book found me and it's certainly one I'd like to show the group, even though we try to stay away from the Holocaust. You know how it is... you get a group of people who are too closely related to a topic and they have a hard time reading about it.

ANYWAY, the book is Sarah's Key, the much-buzzed-about historical novel by Tatiana de Rosnay. I'm excited to have it here. Hopefully the group will feel the same.

There ya go... two, maybe three winners here at the Win a Book hub. Have you won anything? Gotten your picture taken with an author because of an appearance we've told you about?

If you've gotten turned onto something new because of us, we want to know about it.

Matters of the Blood

Parnormal romance fans: just in time for Halloween, my review of Maria Lima's Matters of the Blood is up!

Matters of the Blood is filled with plot twists and artful surprises. Lima builds incredible suspense and allows the reader to savor each revelation. The story is paced well, with fully developed characters and a host of supernatural beings.

Stop by Breeni Books for a chance to win my copy!

The Paper Bag Christmas

Tara's View on Books has a copy of The Paper Bag Christmas, written by Kevin Alan Milne (any relation to A. A. Milne? Man, I bet he hates that question) to share with you.

She's willing to share it with anyone the world around, in fact. You have until November 1, but you need to tell her what you love (or hate) about Christmas.

Be original. Complaining about Christmas decorations being in the store before Halloween is SO last week. 'Cause, you know, that's when you walked in the store and saw it first-hand.

Paul of Dune

Icedream over at Reading in Appalachia dropped into our inbox just now. Seems she's got a copy of Paul of Dune, the brand-new fill-in book in the legendary Dune series. (For those of you keeping track at home, this fills in the time between Dune and Dune Messiah.)

Yeah, yeah, I struggled through the movie, too. At least I can say I did it or else fail out of college. What's YOUR excuse?

The books are better, and since this was written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, there's no reason to expect the quality to suffer.

Head on over to Reading in Appalachia for more details. You know, like a better synopsis of the book. And the fact that this is a US/Canada only contest. And that you have until October 31.

    First Blood

Blood of the Muse, that nameless, faceless cool person of indiscriminate gender (but my gut says guy) has a book I want. It's a four-author, four-story volume that Blood of the Muse describes better than I can. And gives you hints on which author to hang out with (Me, I lurk at Meljean Brook's, which is why I'm drooling over this).

    Check it.

    Losing Kei

Anna, over at Diary of An Eccentric (hey, wait a second. Didn't I rename that blog last time?), has a great interview and give. In fact, the first sentence of her post could almost have come from me. Except I took a different course in college and mostly it proved why I shouldn't have listened to that grad student who was being my advisor. Ouch.

Anyway, the book in question today is called Losing Kei, and it's written by Suzanne Kamata. Anna's got a link to her review, but the interview will tell you a lot about the book, too.

No, if you read them both, you STILL should read the book. You lazy person, you!

The Dangerous Joy of Dr. Sex

    Yikes!

Book Review and Giveaway: "The Dangerous Joy of Dr. Sex"by Pagan Kennedy via Bookroomreviews's Weblog.

Nonfiction is the new black comedy in this hilarious collection of award-winning literary essays written by the infamous Pagan Kennedy. In the title piece, Alex Comfort, author of "The Joy of Sex", reinvents himself as a sex guru in California and hatches a plan to destroy monogamy forever. In the stories that follow, a retired chemist finds a way to turn a wasteland into paradise, an aspiring tyrant tries to become the emperor of America, and an artist rigs himself up to a “brain machine” made from parts he bought at Radio Shack. All of the essays—most of which have appeared in The New York Times Magazine and The Boston Globe Magazine—document the stories of visionaries bent on remaking the world, for better or for worse.

At Bookroomreviews, click on the book cover to read their review. If this sounds like a book you would like, they have an extra copy from the Santa Fe Writer's Project to share!

All you need do to enter is leave a comment and they will draw a winner on October 14th

    US and Canada only, please.

    A Grave in the Air

That's another great book title, isn't it? A Grave in the Air.

Serena, over at Savvy Verse and Wit, sent me this e-mail about it:

    About the book:

These are short stories that show how war can impact families, relationships, and societies. Although the short stories often do not provide the reader with in-depth war strategy and in-the-moment events, whether it is World War II or the Bosnian-Serbian conflict of the 1990s, the impact of war is palatable in the lives of the characters Henighan created.

    About the contest:

Dear Readers, I would love to give away my copy of A Grave in the Air by Stephen Henighan to one lucky winner. Please leave a comment here if you wish to enter the contest. Deadline is Oct. 10 at Midnight EST. I will announce the winner on Oct. 11. If you blog about this contest, you get 2 more entries.

    Stephen Donaldson

Okay, I don't want to say too much here, but I have a lot of admiration for Stephen Donaldson. And Pat's Fantasy Hotlist is eager to help you see why.

He's got a complete set of the new UK edition of Stephen R. Donaldson's scifi masterpiece, The Gap, up for grabs, compliments of the kind folks at Gollancz. The sequence is comprised of The Real Story, Forbidden Knowledge (joined with the first volume in this edition), A Dark and Hungry God Arises, Chaos and Order, and This Day All Gods Die.

Whoa. Pat says this is the best Donaldson to date. Better than Thomas Convenant?

And when you get to the bottom, you just might notice a contest for this novel made up of short stories (we need a name for these sorts of books 'cause they're not a novel and they're not entirely independent stories, either.
